It isn't, because every week somebody on Reddit asks which AI visibility tracker an agency should buy, and the answers are a row of logos with a monthly fee under each one.
So before you put $99 a month (or $295, or "contact sales") on a client's bill, look at what Microsoft and Google hand you for nothing.
The affordable AEO tools every agency already has
These are the affordable AEO tools every agency already has, and all five are free.
| Tool | Price | What it shows you for AEO | What it can't show you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bing Webmaster Tools (AI Performance) | Free | How often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers, which pages, and the grounding queries: the phrases the AI used to retrieve them. Intents, topics and citation share were added in June 2026 | Microsoft's AI surfaces only. No clicks. Microsoft says the grounding queries are a sample |
| Microsoft Clarity (AI Visibility) | Free | A citations dashboard (page citations, share of authority, query topics) and a bot activity dashboard built from server logs, showing which AI bots request which pages | A bot request is not a citation, and Microsoft says so. The log connection can add cost at your CDN or host |
| Google Search Console (Generative AI performance report) | Free | Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Google rolled it out to every site as of August 31, 2026 | Impressions only, and no list of queries |
| Google Analytics 4 | Free | Visits and conversions that arrive from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude, once you filter on the session source | Clicks only. A citation nobody clicks never shows up |
| Looker Studio (Google now calls it Data Studio again) | Free | One client dashboard with Search Console and GA4 side by side. Everything else comes in as a spreadsheet | It reports. It measures nothing |
Why free AEO tools beat paid ones on day one
Free AEO tools beat paid ones on day one for a simple reason: they are first-party. Bing's AI Performance report is Microsoft telling you which of your pages its own AI cited. A paid tracker can't do that. It runs a list of prompts through each engine and records what comes back. Useful. But it is a sample, taken from the outside.
Google is blunt about this in its guide to AI search:
"No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems."
The report I would open first is the grounding queries in Bing. It is the closest thing we have to a keyword report for AI answers. You see the phrases the machine searched for, which is rarely what the person typed.
And don't judge AEO from GA4 alone. Our editor, David Quaid, has a test domain that gets about 100 clicks a month from Bing. The same domain picked up more than 40,000 citations in AI answers. Citations and clicks are not the same thing, and a tool that only counts visits will tell you nothing is happening.
What paid AEO tools add for agencies
What paid AEO tools add for agencies is the engines Microsoft and Google don't report on: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude. That is worth paying for once a client asks "are we in ChatGPT?" every month.
Just know what you are buying. For our September 2026 AI Visibility Index we asked the same 30 questions three times on each engine. Counting each agency once per question, ChatGPT named an agency 206 times across its three runs. Only 40 of those showed up in all three. So one screenshot proves NOTHING. Buy a tracker for the trend across a fixed set of prompts, never for a single number.
The paid trackers in our directory of AI visibility tools started at $20 a month when we last checked their pricing pages, and 7 of them list a plan under $100.
How an agency sets up affordable AEO reporting
An agency can set up affordable AEO reporting for a new client in about an hour, in this order.
- Add the site to Bing Webmaster Tools. You can import it straight from Search Console.
- Install the Clarity tag and open AI Visibility. On WordPress, the Clarity plugin connects the bot activity logs for you.
- Open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console and note which pages already get impressions.
- In GA4, filter Session source with a regex such as
.*(chatgpt|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude).*and look at the key events. - Put all four in one dashboard and send it on the same day every month.
Total software cost: $0. If the numbers show something worth chasing, then go shopping.
