Answer engine optimization questions

What is AEO and why does it matter?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of improving how a brand, product or business appears in answers generated by AI search and answer engines. That includes being named, recommended or cited when people ask systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity or Gemini for information and recommendations. It matters because a buyer can now get a shortlist or answer before clicking a traditional search result. AEO adds that answer-layer visibility to normal SEO rather than replacing SEO.

Is AEO the same as GEO or AI SEO?

The terms overlap heavily. AEO usually means answer engine optimization, GEO means generative engine optimization, and AI SEO is a broader label for improving visibility in AI-powered search. EliteAEO treats them as one provider category and scores what a provider actually offers rather than rewarding the label it uses.

How do you optimize for answer engines in 2026?

Start with the same foundations that make a site strong in search: crawlability, indexability, clear site architecture, useful pages and technically sound delivery. Then make the information an answer engine may need explicit and easy to verify: clear entities, direct answers, descriptive headings, accurate facts, original evidence and pages that add something beyond commodity summaries. Finally, measure the prompts that matter, record which brands and sources are cited, and build the off-site mentions and evidence needed to close those gaps. Google's current guidance says its generative Search features remain rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, so AEO should extend good SEO rather than replace it.

How do I optimize for AEO?

Build a fixed set of commercial and informational questions your audience actually asks, then inspect the answers across the engines that matter. For each query, record who is mentioned, which URLs are cited and what type of source wins. Improve your own pages where you can satisfy the query better, and pursue credible third-party coverage where answer engines repeatedly rely on outside sources. Re-run the same query set over time so you are measuring movement rather than collecting one-off screenshots.

How much does AEO cost?

There is no single market price for AEO. In EliteAEO's State of the AEO Agency Market 2026, 73 of 245 eligible providers publish a starting price. The median disclosed starting price is $1,500, and the middle half of disclosed starting prices runs from $999 to $3,000. SaaS is materially higher in the current dataset, with a $5,000 median disclosed starting price. These figures are starting prices, not total campaign costs, and the dataset does not separate one-off from monthly pricing, so use them as market benchmarks rather than a quote for your project.

Do I need extra budget for AEO?

Not automatically. If you already fund SEO, content and digital PR, the first move is usually to add answer-engine measurement and shift part of the existing work toward the prompts, sources and evidence that actually influence your category. Extra budget becomes useful when the gap requires new research, original data, specialist technical work, stronger third-party coverage or dedicated AI-visibility software. The budget should follow the measured gap rather than exist because AEO has a new acronym.

What are AEO insights?

AEO insights are the actionable findings that come from monitoring how a brand appears in answer engines. Useful AEO insights include mention frequency, citation frequency, cited domains and URLs, competitor share of visibility, the context of recommendations, prompt-level gaps and referral or conversion data where it is available. There is no universal industry-standard 'AEO Insights' score, so any dashboard metric should be judged by how it is calculated and whether the underlying prompts and engines match your market.

What tools are best for conducting keyword research for AEO?

Use conventional search data and answer-engine monitoring together. Search Console and established SEO suites are still useful for demand, query language and pages already earning visibility. AEO-specific tools are more useful for tracking prompts, brand mentions, citations and competing sources across AI engines. EliteAEO maintains a directory of 30 AI search visibility and AI-readiness tools, including Peec AI, Profound, Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar. The directory lists the tools by capabilities, engines tracked and public pricing rather than declaring one universal winner.

How do I implement schema markup for AEO?

Use structured data that accurately describes the visible content and entities on the page, such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article or other appropriate Schema.org types. There is no special 'AEO schema' required for Google's generative Search features, and Google explicitly says not to overfocus on structured data for AI visibility. FAQPage markup can still describe an FAQ page semantically, but Google stopped showing the FAQ rich result in May 2026, so do not add it expecting the old search accordion.

How do I track AEO?

Track a fixed panel of prompts and repeat it on a schedule. For each run, record whether the brand is named, cited or recommended, which URL or third-party source is cited, which competitors appear and the context of the answer. Split the data by engine and query type, then connect it to referral traffic, branded demand, leads and revenue where possible. EliteAEO uses the same principle in its own research: a fixed panel of 30 recommendation queries across six verticals, run across Google organic, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, with results treated as samples rather than proof from a single screenshot.

How do you build a topical authority system for AEO?

Start with the commercial entity or topic you need to own, then map the questions around definitions, problems, use cases, comparisons, alternatives, buying decisions, objections and trust validation. Group them into pages by intent instead of creating a separate thin page for every wording variation. Build clear internal relationships between the pages, add original evidence such as data, benchmarks, tests or expert input, and strengthen the same entity off-site through relevant coverage and citations. The goal is a coherent body of evidence, not a pile of keyword pages.

Choosing an AEO provider

How do I choose an AEO agency?

Check whether the provider actually specializes in AI search work, whether it has evidence in your vertical, whether it publishes outcomes, and whether it measures AI visibility or citations rather than reporting only traditional rankings. Then check independent reputation, market coverage, pricing transparency and how recently the evidence was verified. Those are the same eight factors EliteAEO uses to rank providers, so buyers can compare agencies on the same evidence instead of agency-written 'best AEO company' lists.

About EliteAEO

What is EliteAEO?

EliteAEO is an independent directory and ranking of AEO, GEO and AI SEO agencies and consultants by vertical and US metro. The current dataset profiles 287 providers, with 245 eligible for rankings and 187 verified by evidence. EliteAEO does not sell AEO or SEO services; it researches providers, publishes rankings and market data, and lets buyers compare the evidence behind each listing.

How does EliteAEO rank AEO providers?

Every eligible provider is scored on the same eight factors: AI SEO specialization, vertical evidence, demonstrated outcomes, AI measurement capability, third-party reputation, relevant market coverage, transparency, and freshness and verification. The weighting and eligibility rules are published on the methodology page. Evidence is checked before scoring, and payment data is not read by the ranking process.

Can an agency pay to rank higher on EliteAEO?

No. Listing and verification are free, and paid plans do not change the editorial order. Providers can buy clearly labeled Featured or Sponsored visibility and enhanced profile features, but they cannot buy a higher editorial rank, a Verified badge, inclusion in a ranking or a competitor's removal.

What does Verified mean on EliteAEO?

A provider is marked Verified when EliteAEO has checked that the website is live and belongs to a real company, that at least one independent third-party profile exists, and that at least one piece of evidence ties the provider to the vertical where it is ranked. Verification is evidence-based, does not require payment and never changes editorial rank.
