Evaluating a top AEO agency is harder than it looks, because almost every SEO agency now sells AEO (answer engine optimization) and plenty of new firms sell nothing else. The pitches sound alike: more mentions in ChatGPT, citations in Google AI Overviews, visibility in Perplexity and Gemini. What separates a strong AEO agency from a weak one is hard to see in a sales deck, so this guide sets out what to ask, what a good answer looks like and where the warning signs are.
What is an AEO visibility SEO agency?
An AEO visibility SEO agency works to get your business named, cited or recommended when people ask AI tools questions about your category. The deliverable is not a ranking position. It is a measured share of the answers: how often you appear across a fixed set of buyer questions, on which engines, and which of your pages or third-party mentions the engines use as sources.
Most of these firms are SEO agencies that added AI visibility tracking, and some use the labels GEO or AI SEO for the same service. We keep a longer definition of an AEO agency with the typical service list.
AEO vs SEO: the differences that matter when choosing an agency
The AEO vs SEO differences that matter when choosing an agency are smaller than most agency pitches admit, so start with the overlap. Google's own documentation says the usual SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in them. ChatGPT search and Perplexity also retrieve pages from the web before they write an answer. A page that cannot be crawled, indexed and ranked is rarely the page an answer engine cites. An AEO agency without real SEO skill is selling half a job.
The differences sit in measurement and in where the work goes. An SEO report tracks rankings, clicks and conversions. An AEO report adds a fixed prompt set: whether you are named, whether your site is cited, which competitors appear and which third-party pages the engines keep pulling from. That last point pushes AEO work toward reviews, directories, trade press and comparison articles, because those are often the sources an AI answer leans on.
AEO vs SEO: the agency expertise to look for
The AEO vs SEO split in agency expertise shows up in who does the work, so ask who handles the technical SEO, the content and the link and PR work, and who runs the prompt tracking. A small firm can have one person covering several of those. A firm with nobody on the SEO side is the one to walk away from. Our short answer to what AEO vs SEO means covers the basics if you are new to the terms.
How to choose an SEO agency for AEO (answer engine optimization)
To choose an SEO agency for AEO (answer engine optimization), run every agency on your shortlist through the same eight checks. Ask for the evidence in writing, not on a call.
| Check | What a strong answer looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt baseline | A written list of 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask, run across named engines before any work starts | One screenshot of one prompt |
| SEO foundations | Named people who handle technical SEO, content and link acquisition | "AEO replaces SEO" |
| Evidence in your industry | A dated case study or named clients in your vertical | Only general claims about AI |
| Measurement | The same prompts repeated on a schedule, split by engine, with cited URLs recorded | A proprietary "AI score" with no method behind it |
| Source plan | A list of the third-party sites the engines cite in your category and a plan to earn coverage there | Mass-produced articles or bought reviews |
| Pricing and terms | Scope, deliverables and price in writing, with a short first term | Long lock-in plus "guaranteed" AI placement |
| Reputation | Reviews and profiles on sites the agency does not control | Only "best agency" lists the agency wrote about itself |
| Business results | Reporting that connects AI referrals, branded search and leads | Mention counts and nothing else |
These checks mirror the eight factors EliteAEO scores every provider on, from AI SEO specialization and vertical evidence to transparency and freshness.
AEO agency services: the best practices the work should follow
AEO agency services should follow the same best practices as good SEO work, with a sharper measurement layer on top. Whatever the agency calls its packages, the services should cover these areas:
- Prompt research. Real buyer questions, including "best X for Y" and comparison prompts, not only the head keyword.
- Access for AI crawlers. Checking that robots.txt and firewalls let search crawlers through, including OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, which the answer engines use to find pages.
- Pages that answer directly. Clear headings, a direct answer near the top, specific facts and original information a summary cannot replace.
- Consistent entity facts. The same name, services, locations and descriptions on your site, your profiles and the directories that matter in your field.
- Third-party coverage. Earning mentions in the reviews, lists and publications the engines already cite for your category.
- Tracking. A fixed prompt panel rerun on a schedule, often with dedicated software. Our directory of AI visibility tracking tools lists what each one monitors.
Be wary of anyone selling a special "AEO schema" as the fix. Structured data should describe what is on the page accurately, and Google says it does not need special markup for its AI features.
Best practices for selecting an AEO agency in 2026
The best practices for selecting an AEO agency in 2026 come down to six steps, taken in this order.
- Take your own baseline first. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google 20 to 30 questions your buyers would ask, and note who gets named. Then you can judge every pitch against the same facts.
- Shortlist three to five agencies with evidence in your industry. An agency that wins citations for software companies may have no track record with dentists or law firms.
- Ask each finalist for its baseline of your brand before you sign. Compare the prompts they chose. Weak prompt lists predict weak work.
- Compare prices against the market. 73 of 245 providers eligible for an EliteAEO ranking publish a starting price. The median disclosed starting price is $1,500, and the middle half runs from $999 to $3,000. The State of the AEO Agency Market 2026 breaks that down by vertical.
- Start with a 90-day scope. Fix the prompt set, the engines and the reporting format in the contract so progress can be checked.
- Call a reference in your industry. Ask what moved, how long it took and what the agency reported.
The best SEO agency for AI-native AEO optimization: what "AI-native" should mean
When you look for the best SEO agency for AI-native AEO optimization, remember that "AI-native" is a sales label, not a qualification. Some firms use it to mean they were founded after ChatGPT; others mean they use AI to write content at volume, which can hurt more than it helps. The version worth paying for is an agency that measures AI visibility as a routine part of the job and changes its work based on what the tracking shows.
That is less common than the marketing suggests. Of the 245 providers eligible for an EliteAEO ranking, 128 say on their public pages that they report AI visibility to clients. Ask any "AI-native" agency to show a real report, with the prompts, engines, dates and cited sources, and compare it with our notes on how to track AEO. The best SEO agency for AEO is usually a strong SEO agency that can prove it tracks answers, not a new brand with a new acronym.
Best AEO agency for B2B SaaS companies
The best AEO agency for B2B SaaS companies has to work where software buyers research, and they research heavily in AI tools with specific prompts: "best CRM for a 20-person agency," "alternatives to" a named product, "X vs Y." An AEO agency for B2B SaaS needs to work that comparison layer. That means product and integration pages that state facts plainly, pricing that can be read without a sales call, a presence on the review platforms and communities buyers trust, and reporting that follows AI-referred visitors through to trials and demos.
SaaS also has the highest disclosed prices of any vertical in our data. 41 providers are eligible for the SaaS ranking. 29 of them say they report AI visibility, 13 publish a starting price, the median of those prices is $5,000, and 18 show a SaaS case study with results. See the full ranking of AEO agencies for SaaS companies with the evidence behind each position.
Growth Pro agency AEO: which Growth Pro is it?
A search for a Growth Pro agency for AEO turns up three unrelated companies, so check which one you are talking to.
- Growth Marketing Pro (growthmarketingpro.com) is a US growth marketing agency with teams in San Francisco, San Diego and Boston. Its AEO page calls it the "World's #1 AEO Agency," says it guarantees LLM visibility for SaaS, ecommerce and B2B companies, and lists content optimization, Reddit marketing, Wikipedia work, digital PR, link building, technical AEO and LLM reporting. It publishes client results such as a 24.6% increase in LLM mention rate for Dutch.
- Growth.pro is Growth Pro Sdn. Bhd., an AI visibility consultancy in Penang, Malaysia. It sells AEO and GEO to Malaysian enterprise brands under what it calls the PAVA Framework (Presence, Authority, Visibility, Amplification).
- GrowthPro AI (growthproai.com) is software, not an agency. It sells local SEO and Google Business Profile tools, with a feature that pushes question-and-answer content to Business Profile descriptions, Google Posts and website schema.
Whichever one you are considering, run it through the eight checks above. Where an agency guarantees visibility in AI answers, ask exactly what is guaranteed and what happens if it is not delivered. None of the three has an EliteAEO profile yet, so none appears in our rankings.
Oliver agency AEO: does OLIVER offer answer engine optimization?
The Oliver agency, styled OLIVER, is not an AEO agency in the usual sense: it designs, builds and runs in-house marketing teams inside large brands, and says it is trusted by 8 of the world's top 10 advertisers. When we checked its homepage and services page in September 2026, neither mentioned answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization or AI search visibility, so AEO is not a named OLIVER service.
Its parent, The Brandtech Group, does work on the measurement side: sister company Jellyfish launched the Share of Model platform, which analyzes how large language models perceive brands. An OLIVER-run in-house team can move AEO levers quickly across product pages, PR and content. For specialist prompt tracking and for earning citations on the sites AI answers draw from, a dedicated AEO agency is the closer fit.
Red flags when evaluating an AEO agency
These red flags come up again and again when evaluating an AEO agency.
- Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. Nobody controls what an answer engine says, and answers change from one run to the next.
- A "best AEO agencies" list where the author ranks first. Check who published the list before you trust it.
- Volume content as the main service. Hundreds of thin AI-written pages can drag a site down in regular search, which then weakens it in AI answers too.
- No access to the tracking data. You should see the prompts, the dates and the raw answers, not only a chart.
- Schema as the headline fix. Accurate markup is housekeeping, not an AEO strategy.
Where to find top AEO agencies
The most reliable place to find top AEO agencies is an independent ranking that shows its evidence and sorts providers by the industry you work in.
How to find the best AEO agency for your industry
The best AEO agency depends on your industry and market, so EliteAEO ranks providers separately by vertical, with city rankings for major US metros. Every provider is scored on the same published factors, and payment never changes the order; paid positions are labeled under our advertising policy.
Current rankings cover AEO agencies for dentists, AEO agencies for law firms, AEO agencies for healthcare, AEO agencies for home services and AEO agencies for local businesses, alongside the SaaS ranking above. 187 of the 287 providers we have profiled are verified by evidence, and you can search every AEO agency profile by vertical, location and status.
