Who writes the lists of the best AEO agencies
The lists of the best AEO agencies are mostly written by agencies. For our September 2026 AI Visibility Index we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews 30 questions a buyer would ask about hiring an agency, three times each, and read all 358 answers.
- 226 of the 358 answers (63%) cited at least one "best agencies" list article.
- 167 (47%) cited a list published by an agency in our own dataset.
- The most-cited list publisher is itself an agency. Its lists were cited in 89 answers, and the agency was named in 103.
So when an AI engine tells you who the best AEO agency is, there is close to an even chance it is leaning on a list an agency wrote. LLMs are consensus engines, not research tools. They repeat what the web says most often, and the people with the strongest reason to say it are the ones on the list.
That isn't a scandal. It is marketing. But you should know it before you treat a list as research.
What "best" should mean for an AEO agency
What "best" should mean for an AEO agency is evidence you can open and read. That is all EliteAEO scores. Seven factors, published with their weights: AI SEO specialization, evidence in your industry, proof of AI search results for a client, AI measurement, reputation on sites the agency doesn't control, coverage and transparency. The methodology has the point rules.
Here is how thin the evidence gets. We have profiled 387 providers. 345 are eligible for a ranking. Only 104 of those publish proof that they got a client into AI answers. Everybody sells it. Fewer than a third show it. The full breakdown is in the State of the AEO Agency Market 2026.

The best AEO agencies by industry, as the national rankings stand today, are below. There is no single winner, because the best agency for a law firm is rarely the best one for a software company.

Each industry page also links to its city rankings, and every profile shows the evidence behind its position. The order changes when the evidence changes. It does not change when somebody pays.
How to use a list of the best AEO agencies
Use a list of the best AEO agencies as a shortlist, never as a decision.
- Start with your industry, then your city if you want a firm with a local office.
- Take the top three to five and open their evidence. Every profile links to what we checked. Google's own advice on hiring an SEO starts in the same place: "Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?"
- Ask each one for a baseline of your brand before you sign anything.
- Compare the quotes with the market. The median published monthly price in our dataset is $1,500.
And expect disagreement. In the index, only 23 of the 426 agency recommendations we recorded were made by all four engines. If the machines can't agree on who is best, one list shouldn't settle it for you either. That includes ours.
Two disclosures. Paid positions on EliteAEO are labeled and never change the order, and the advertising policy spells that out. And I run a search business of my own. It is not listed or ranked here.
